C. Edward S. Mitchell was born July 20, 1943, in Carlisle,
Pennsylvania, where his father was attending the Dickinson School of
Law. He grew up in
Williamsport,
attended Williamsport Public Schools, and graduated from Williamsport
High School. He graduated from Lafayette College with an AB in 1965.
Following college, he served two years active duty as an officer in the
United States Army. After separation from active duty in 1967, he
attended Dickinson School of Law from which he received a JD Cum Laude
in 1970. While at Dickinson, he served as editor-in-chief of the
Dickinson Law Review and received the Corpus Juris Secundum Award for
the student who contributed the most to overall legal education.
Mr. Mitchell began practice in 1970 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with
the firm of Shearer, Mette, and Hoerner. In 1972, he returned to
Williamsport and entered practice with his father, J. Neafie Mitchell.
On January 1, 1976, his father and he formed Mitchell and Mitchell which
is the predecessor of the current firm.
Mr. Mitchell is admitted to practice before all state courts in
Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the Middle District
of Pennsylvania, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third
Circuit, and the United States Tax Court.
Mr. Mitchell has engaged in an active civil trial practice since August
1972. He has litigated in all counties in North Central Pennsylvania and
has handled appeals in state and federal courts to both the Pennsylvania
Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court. For more than twenty
years, his practice has been concentrated in defense of professionals in
professional liability cases, particularly doctors and lawyers. He also
has an active mediation practice.
Mr. Mitchell has been active in professional organizations. He is a
member of the Pennsylvania, Federal and American Bar Associations, the
Pennsylvania Defense Institute, the Defense Research Institute, and the
American Judicature Society. He is a past president of the Lycoming Law
Association and is currently Chairman of the Bench Bar Committee. He is
a past Chairman of the Middle District Lawyer's Advisory Committee, and
a past member of the Middle District Civil Justice Reform Act Committee.
He was a delegate to the Third Circuit Judicial Conference in 1991 and
1993. Since 1992 he has been an elected delegate to the PBA House of
Delegates. He has been a certified Federal Court Mediator since 1994. He
is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was selected by
Philadelphia Magazine as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer in 2005.
Mr. Mitchell has been active in his community. He has served as a
director and officer of the Lycoming United Way, the Lycoming Child Day
Care Center, and Christ Episcopal Church. He is a past member of the
Williamsport Zoning and Hearing Board and a past chairman of the
Williamsport Fire Civil Service Commission. He is a past Trustee of the
James V. Brown Library.
Mr. Mitchell's recreation interests include running, hunting, fishing,
and other outdoor sports. He served twenty-five years as an officer and
director of the Gray's Run Hunting and Fishing Club, including six years
as President. He is currently Vice President.
Mr. Mitchell is the father of an adult married son, Jacob N. Mitchell
II, an MBA graduate and current investment banker in Charlotte, North
Carolina and a former United States Marine Corps Officer. He is the
father of an adult married daughter, Caroline Mitchell Hakel, a former
live television reporter and United Way executive. He has two
granddaughters and two grandsons . His children and grandchildren live
in Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina.
